Working together with families to encourage children to make positive choices about the food
and drinks they enjoy each day.

At AWIS, we believe that developing healthy habits from an early age is an important part of

supporting our pupils’ wellbeing, growth and learning. Our Healthy Eating Policy helps us

work together with families to encourage children to make positive choices about the food

and drinks they enjoy each day.

Healthy Lunchboxes

A balanced lunchbox can help children stay energised and ready to learn throughout the

school day. We encourage families to include a variety of fruit and vegetables, wholegrain or

starchy foods, protein-rich foods and dairy products or suitable alternatives.

To support a consistent approach to healthy eating, chocolate, sweets, biscuits, crisps,

cakes, donuts and other foods high in sugar, salt or saturated fat should not be brought into

school as part of pupils’ lunches or snacks. Water is always the best choice for keeping

hydrated.

Keeping Everyone Safe

Food allergies can be extremely serious, so keeping our school community safe is a shared

responsibility. Nuts and products containing nuts must not be brought onto the school

premises, and pupils should not share food from their lunchboxes.

We also ask parents to keep the school informed of any allergies, intolerances or specific

dietary requirements their child may have.

Celebrating Birthdays Differently

Birthdays are special, and we love celebrating these important moments with our pupils!

Rather than bringing cakes, donuts, sweets or chocolates into school, families who wish to

send something for their child’s classmates can choose a healthy alternative, such as

individual fruit or vegetable snacks. A small non-food item, such as a pencil or rubber, is

another option.

The birthday celebration remains just as important; we are simply finding healthier ways to

mark the occasion.

Working Together

Healthy eating is about developing positive habits that children can carry with them as they

grow. By working together, school and home can help our pupils understand the importance of making balanced choices and taking responsibility for their own health and wellbeing.
