- Student Council | AWIS - international school in Doha
Student Council At AWIS, we believe in empowering students to be leaders, decision-makers, and active participants in their school community. The Student Council is a vital part of this, providing children with opportunities to develop key life skills while making meaningful contributions to school life. STUDENTS Awards and Incentives House System School Day Student Council Student Council ensure student opinions are heard, while developing important leadership skills. During Term 1, students from Years 2 to 6 are given the opportunity to put themselves forward for a Student Council role within their class. Interested students will tell their class why they think they would make a good Student Councillor. The class will then vote to decide the two Student Councillors. After the Student Council elections have taken place, management and Key Stage 2 teachers will decide who they think will be a suitable Head Boy or Head Girl. These individuals will support the Student Councillors. Why Student Council? Our Student Council fulfils an important role in the school, including: Providing a platform for students to have a voice in the decision-making processes within the school. They can express their opinions, needs, and concerns. Giving students the opportunity to develop leadership, organisational, and communication skills. Allowing children to have input into the organisation of events, activities, and initiatives that help build a sense of community within the school. Teaching accountability, as students are entrusted with making decisions that affect their peers and the school community. Qualities We Look For The qualities we look for in our Student Councillors are: Initiative and commitment Reliability and good time management Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) Good organisational skills (personal and teamwork) Perseverance and determination Responsibility and leadership The confidence to bring ideas to the table and the maturity to accept decisions Being approachable and aware of the needs of students across the school A SMILE ! Our Expectations Our expectations of the Head Boy and Head Girl are: To act as role models for students and promote the ethos of AWIS. To represent the school as the students' ‘public face,’ including meeting important visitors and attending external events. To speak at events where students, teachers, and parents are present. To write articles documenting student life in the school. To work closely with the Principal and the management team to develop and improve the school’s practices and environment. To lead the Student Council and ensure all duties across the school are upheld

Alice the Musical A Magical Journey to Wonderland Published: 19 May 2025 An unforgettable journey to wonderland, brought to life through the amazing acting, singing and dancing of over 50 AWIS students. What an unforgettable adventure we’ve had with Alice the Musical! As Musical Director, I had the absolute pleasure of guiding our incredibly talented students through this creative journey from auditions to standing ovations. The Build Up It all began back in November, when the excitement started to build as we announced auditions for our school production. Over 77 children auditioned, a fantastic turnout which showed the enthusiasm and passion of our students. Each child sang a song of their choice and performed a character excerpt. It’s safe to say that Ms. Sharon, Ms. Rebecca and I were blown away by their courage, talent, and energy. Casting was no easy task! After much consideration, we revealed the final cast list in December to great anticipation and cheers for one another. Rehearsals officially kicked off in January. Each week, our dedicated chorus worked hard learning brand new songs, while those with speaking roles brought their characters to life scene by scene. From the Mad Hatter to the Queen of Hearts, we were getting to know a whole new cast of wonderful characters and the children were already showing another side to them full of drama and fun. We rehearsed consistently right through to March, when we paused for a well-deserved break during Ramadan. Once April sprang, it was full steam ahead as we entered our final stretch. Rehearsals intensified for sure with extra hours after school, lunchtime run-throughs, and every spare moment spent polishing scenes, lines, and songs. The commitment shown by the children was nothing short of superb. The days were flying by and before we knew it the big nights had arrived May 18 and 19. As the children arrived early, bubbling with excitement and nerves, we could feel the magic in the air. Parents began to fill the seats, the lights dimmed, and all of a sudden… we were in Wonderland. The Performance What followed was an electrifying performance filled with colour, laughter and music. The audience were taken on an adventure from the real world to wonderland meeting the most peculiar characters. We took part in a ‘Caucus Race’, a ‘Mad Tea Party’ and even had time for a game of ‘Croquet’ before investigating ‘Who Stole the Tarts?’ The children shone on stage, bringing every character to life with joy and confidence. There were so many beautiful musical moments, not to mention a few surprises that had the audience singing along too! The atmosphere was marvelous. It was much more than a show, it was a celebration of hard work, creativity, and teamwork. The first of its kind in AWIS, and we, the staff, parents and AWIS community could not be prouder of every single child who took part. This will be a production we all remember for years to come. Acknowledgements Of course, none of this would have been possible without the incredible behind-the-scenes teamwork and external support of more people than I can individually mention by name. A heartfelt thank you goes to our fantastic team here at AWIS, from face painting and costume creation, to props and set design, scene transitions. Managing music cues, calming nerves, creating smiles and helping coordinate every moment backstage took a true village effort, and I’m so grateful and proud of what we accomplished together. We must also thank our wonderful parents who, over many months, through their full support behing theproduction and their amazingly talented children. Our generous sponsors also deserve our thanks for their vital support which made the production possible: Gold Sponsors: Snoonu, and Manweir WLL (Mr. Neil Angus) Silver Sponsors: BrandX, and Strong Rent-A-Car Bronze Sponsors: The Karanfil Family Venue: Shaza Hotel Doha But perhaps most important of all: Congratulations to the cast of Alice the Musical 2025! - School Day | AWIS - international school in Doha
School Day Drop off is from 06:45 and the school day starts for children at 07:05, when their class teacher takes them in to school. STUDENTS Awards and Incentives House System School Day Student Council The school gates do not open before 06:45 each morning. The school day starts at 07:05 when children are taken into school by their class teacher. Developing independence is an important component of the IPC and students continue to be shown how to organise themselves for learning. A typical day consists of 6 lessons (each of approximately 50 minutes), with two 30-minute breaks throughout the day. Children have the opportunity to both eat and play during these breaks. Classes finish at 13:45 (13:00 for students in Foundation Stage). Children are responsible for packing their own belongings at the end of each day and for ensuring all homework activities are taken home for completion. Food Please provide a lunchbox stocked with range of healthy snacks for your child to eat during break times. A sandwich, fruit, vegetable sticks and plain biscuits are all ideal. Remember to include a water bottle. Fizzy drinks, glass bottles, chocolate, nuts and chewing gum should not be sent to school. - Requirements | AWIS - international school in Doha
Requirements Schools in Qatar are regulated by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, who impose certain rules on all schools regarding student admissions and the data that must be collected and shared with them. ADMISSIONS Requirements Application Process Assessment School Fees Paperwork and other requirements to join AWIS Applying to AWIS At the time of application, all we require is the completed online Expression of Interest Form . This gives us sufficient information to begin the application process. Your child's details and contact information are entered in to our admissions system, and with this we can commence the application process . New to Qatar At the time of application, we try to be as flexible as possible with parents. This is especially true of parents who are still planning their move to Qatar, or have only recently arrived. We do take in to accounts people's special circumstances, and are happy to advise on securing a school place. Feel free to contact us if you have concerns. We are often able to assess and make a firm offer of a school place, even if your child then has to wait for all the required paperwork (see below) before they can start school. Starting At AWIS Prior to your child starting, we require that you complete our Application Form in full and provide us with all the required documents (see below). The Application Form (see download button below) provides us with some important additional information, including details of all parents / guardians, health records, and whether they can appear on social media. Please ensure you sign the completed Application Form and submit it to the School Office, together with all the required supporting documents. Required Documents We are required by the authorities in Qatar to have copies of all the following documents on file, before your child starts: Student's Qatar ID - see note 1 below Student's passport Qatar ID's for both parents Student's birth certificate Student's immunisation record Letter of employment from student's sponsor's workplace Most recent school report - see note 2 below Medical report - Foundation Stage and Year 1 students only Fully completed and signed Application Form Note 1: Valid Qatar ID Required Parents new to Qatar should be aware that it is against Ministry regulations for any school to register a student who does not have a valid Qatar ID. You need to allow time from arriving in the country for the father (normally the father, but could be the wife) to complete residency proceedings before he can begin the process of applying for residency for the rest of the family. This can take a considerable amount of time, during which the children are unable to attend school. If you are moving to Qatar, we recommend you take advice from your employer about timescales, as the length of time taken to complete residency for the whole family varies substantially depending upon circumstances. Note 2: Attestation of School Reports There is a Ministry requirement for students joining us in Year 2 or above, and transferring from outside Qatar (rather than transferring schools within the country), to supply the latest report from their previous school. This has to be attested (ie stamped) by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Qatar Embassy in the country you are coming from, then attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar. - Moving to Qatar as a UK-Qualified Teacher | AWIS - international school in Doha
Moving to Qatar as a UK-Qualified Teacher A Comprehensive Guide to Regulations and Requirements Published: 1 December 2025 A brief overview of the process and paperwork entailed in accepting a job at an international school in Qatar Are you a UK-qualified teacher dreaming of teaching abroad in a vibrant international school? Qatar offers an exciting opportunity, with its world-class facilities, tax-free salaries, and supportive environment for expatriate educators. However, navigating Qatar’s regulatory framework can initialy seem daunting. Howeve, with the right support, it is a relatively straight forward process. It does require some time, effort, and money but this is a one-off: once you are established in Qatar, it is an easy, welcoming place to live and work. This guide outlines the key regulatory requirements, plus practical steps for document attestation and visas. Rules are subject to change, but (to the best of our knowledge) these details are correct at the time of writing. If you are eyeing a role in a British-curriculum school like ours, understanding these rules will help you prepare confidently. Qualifying to Teach in Private International Schools The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MOEHE) oversees all private schools, including international ones, ensuring teachers meet strict standards for qualifications, experience, and character. For UK-qualified teachers, this means aligning your credentials with Qatar’s licensing process. Age Limits: Expatriate teachers must typically be not more than 50 years old at the time they start their employment, although special approvals may be possible beyond that. Qualifications: You need a relevant bachelor’s degree: this is typically a Bachelor of Education, although a Bachelor of Arts that references teaching or your subject specialisation is also acceptable. Note that: A non-teaching bachelor's degree with a PGCE (post graduate certificate of education) is no longer accepted . Your degree must have been full-time, face-to-face teaching: online degrees are not accepted. For British schools, QTS (qualified teacher status) is highly valued, but not essential. Good Character: All teachers are required to be of good character, with no dismissals for disciplinary issues or convictions for dishonesty. A police clearance certificate is required from your home country and, if alreay working overseas, from your current country of residence. Securing Your Residence Permit Beyond teaching approval, the MOI controls entry, and residency in Qatar via sponsorship from your employer. Your school handles this, and will typically obtain your work visa prior to your arrival in Qatar. Soon after arrival, the school will apply for your Residence Permit and arrange for you to go for a medical examination (blood tests, X-ray) confirming fitness, and biometrics (fingerprints, photo). Allow a few weeks for this data to be processed: your residency will then confirmed by the issuing you with your Qatar ID card. Securing your Qatar ID is an important milestone, as it apart from officially confirming your right to live and work in Qatar, it is an essential document for contracting with companies and government departments. For example, it enables you to open a bank account, apply for a driving licence, own/lease a car, rent your own accommodation, and much more. Essential Documents and the Attestation Process Qatar requires full attestation for key documents to verify authenticity. Your employer can advise on this, and there are a number of companies in the UK who specialise (for a fee!) in assisting teachers through this process. Before Leaving the UK: Obtain a Police Clearance Certificate. This is not the full police check, simply a disclosure statement that the police have no records on you. Obtain certified copies of your degree certificate and transcript of grades, attested as a true copy by a solicitor Obtain a declaration from the university that your degree was full-time and face-to-face Have the above documents attested by the Qatar Embassy in London. Ensure you have at least 18 months validity on your passport (the passport cannot expire before your Qatar ID), and that your employer has your up-to-date passport number (your visa is tied to your passport number, so changing your passport at the last minute will invalidate the visa!) Upon Arrival in Qatar: The Police Clearance Certificate and attested degree, trancript, and university declaration then have to be further attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Doha. Your employer will often do this on your behalf. All documents are then submitted to apply for your Residence Permit and Qatar ID. Why Qatar? UK teachers thrive here with competitive packages, professional development, and a safe, family-oriented expat life. Salaries are tax-free, there is a vibrant social life, and there are plenty of opportunities for travel. Qatar awaits - your next chapter starts here!
