  • Student Assessment | AWIS - international school in Doha

Regular assessment of individual progress is a cornerstone of ensuring teaching is constantly adapted to the changing needs of individual students. Student Assessment If we do not know where children are starting from, how can we tell where they have reached? And if we do not know where they have reached, how can we tell the progress they have made? LEARNING Year Groups Curriculum Learning Approach Student Assessment Extra-Curricula Activities Anyone who is interested in children’s learning has to be interested in assessment. Tracking Student Progress Regular assessment of individual progress is a cornerstone of ensuring teaching is constantly adapted to the changing needs of individual students. Assessment at AWIS includes a mix of formative and summative assessment; each allows us to gather a range of important data that is used to continually improve the teaching and learning happening in school. Summative Assessment identifies the standard of attainment at a particular point in time e.g. end of unit, term or year. We use this information to track progress and report back to parents. We firmly believe, however, that the overall purpose of assessment is to improve standards, not merely measure them. Formative Assessment is an integral part of our teaching and learning program and is an invaluable tool to promote effective further learning. This form of assessment is continual and enables us to set targets, whether class, group or individual, for further development to take place. Reporting Termly reports keep parents regularly appraised of the progress of their child, assessed against the National Curriculum of England. Our Parent-Teacher Conferences, give our parents the opportunity for one-on-one feedback and discussion with their child's teachers. Benchmarking We use periodic external assessments to benchmark our own internal data against the wider world. This ensures the attainment grades we issue are comparable to those issued by other international schools. Each year, all our students in Years 2, 4 and 6 sit standardised Cognitive Abilities Tests (CAT4) administered by GL Assessment. These assessments will be conducted in school and will cover verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning which will provide an objective perspective on potential student achievement. Results provide very specific benchmarking data on where each child is in their learning, and how this compares with their contemporaries, both within Qatar and the wider world. We use this data to validate our own assessment decisions, to ensure we are being accurate and objective when measuring student attainment and progress. The school also participates in the TIMSS and PERLS benchmarking studies. These collect comparative worldwide data on student attainment, once every 4 years. An article on our excellent results in the most recent tests can be found here .

School Day Drop off is from 06:45 and the school day starts for children at 07:05, when their class teacher takes them in to school. STUDENTS Awards and Incentives House System School Day Student Council The school gates do not open before 06:45 each morning. The school day starts at 07:05 when children are taken into school by their class teacher. Developing independence is an important component of the IPC and students continue to be shown how to organise themselves for learning. A typical day consists of 6 lessons (each of approximately 50 minutes), with two 30-minute breaks throughout the day. Children have the opportunity to both eat and play during these breaks. Classes finish at 13:45 (13:00 for students in Foundation Stage). Children are responsible for packing their own belongings at the end of each day and for ensuring all homework activities are taken home for completion. Food Please provide a lunchbox stocked with range of healthy snacks for your child to eat during break times. A sandwich, fruit, vegetable sticks and plain biscuits are all ideal. Remember to include a water bottle. Fizzy drinks, glass bottles, chocolate, nuts and chewing gum should not be sent to school. What to Bring All children should bring to school a small bag containing their lunchbox, water bottle, hat, etc. Please do not provide excessively large trolley bags, as these create problems with storage and carrying up and down stairs. Foundation Stage Foundation Stage children should additionally bring a spare change of clothing. Years 1 to 2 Years 3 to 4 Students in Years 3 to 4 are also requested to provide the following items of personal equipment: clear pencil case HB pencils pencil sharpener erasers 30cm plastic ruler scissors 2 large glue sticks A4 whiteboard 2 whiteboard pens whiteboard eraser 1 box of coloured pencils 2 different coloured highlighters Years 5 to 6 For students in Years 5 to 6, we recommend the same personal equipment as for Milepost 2 (see above), plus a drawing compass and protractor.

  • Awards and Incentives | AWIS - international school in Doha

Awards and Incentives Student effort and attainment is celebrated at all levels; from the smallest reward stickers and Class Dojo points through to major rewards evenings. STUDENTS Awards and Incentives House System School Day Student Council We celebrate student learning, developing a positive and ambitious learning environment. Class Dojo Class Dojo is used as a positive reward system in school. Children are allocated a Dojo monster and are rewarded when a teacher in school sees them demonstrating an IPC Personal Learning Goal. These Learning Goals are embedded consistently throughout the school and all teachers follow the same guidelines. Dojos are rewarded to children that have been: Adaptable Ethical Resilient Thinkers Collaborators Communicators Empathetic Respectful Children can spend their Dojo points on a reward of their choice. These rewards, for example, could include extra playtime, a homework pass or lunch with the Teacher or Principal and will be valued accordingly. These points will then be subtracted from their total Class Dojo points. Class Dojo points will never be taken away for negative behaviour. We have a positive Behaviour Policy in place which includes steps such as timeout and communicating to parents. Our aim is always to encourage the children to make the right choices, and we appreciate parental support in helping to achieve this. Star of the Week As a school we place great emphasis on the IPC Personal Learning Goals . Star of the Week certificates will be awarded when a child has excelled in a particular IPC Personal Learning Goal. These are shared in the weekly assembly. Receiving a certificate allows a child to get two Dojo points for that learning goal. Student Rewards Special events are organised throughout the year to reward behaviour and celebrate achievement. These include movie nights, camp outs, splash days and special out-of-school trips. Student Leaders Student Leaders are elected each year from Milepost 3 students. They ensure a student voice, and gain valuable opportunities to develop leadership skills
